A forward facing stroller is very common. They are a great way to show your baby the world around them, enriching their lives with new sights and sounds. They even have an added feature for showing the world how cute your baby is.

A recent study has shown that because your child is unable to see your face during your walks, this might give him emotional distress, increasing his stress levels and possibly delaying developmental milestones in life. The study was conducted by the Department of Psychology of Dundee University, Scotland. Using neuroscience, they used almost three thousand parent and infant pairs to study the difference between mothers who used forward facing and rear facing strollers. Their studies found that 25% of mothers with rear facing strollers conversed more often with their babies than mothers with forward facing strollers. The researchers found that babies in forward facing strollers had higher heart rates than those in rear facing ones. This makes the babies in rear facing strollers twice more likely to fall asleep.

According to the head of the study, Dr. Suzanne Zeedyk of Dundee University School of Psychology, “…life in a buggy is emotionally impoverished and possibly stressful”, she adds, “Stressed babies grow into anxious adults.” Doctor Zeedyk says that babies need to see their parents constantly to encourage growth, development and communication.

The study is limited to the area of Britain. So far no studies have been conducted in different countries and cultures.

The forward facing stroller is the most common and easily accessible. If you’re willing to shell out some extra cash for the rear-facing stroller, then there’s no harm in being able to appreciate your baby on a more face to face way. If anything, the importance of the study is to encourage mothers to talk more often with their babies.

Jewelry boxes are often remarkable memorabilia. Hand crafted and lovingly carved in an age gone by, they get passed down through the generations from mother to daughter to granddaughter. Each step along time bringing with it colorful stories of the past and strong sentimental memories. Jewelry boxes are the sort of treasures, even in today’s world, heck especially in today’s world, that every woman should seek to acquire and hang on to as an heirloom to hand down to her own daughter or favorite niece.

My own mother had a musical jewelry box carved with an image of the Three Wise Men. When you open it, it plays one of those old, sweet, haunting Christmas songs about the Wise Men and their travels. My sister had her own childhood box with a horse motif painted on it, but when she moved out of home to be on her own, my mother bequeathed to her the music box. When my sister finally had a daughter of her own, she gave her daughter the horse jewelry box to begin her own collection of jewelry.

Nowadays, you can still find many exquisite American, Spanish, or even Italian jewelry boxes for girls and women on the market. Often times their designs hearken back to earlier eras, but there are also plenty of modern styles to suit women and young girls of all personalities. If you’re looking to find a special keepsake for your daughter or niece or granddaughter, then you should definitely consider investing in something like this. Not only are they beautiful and feminine, but they are easy to travel with, and highly functional. Slip in some poignant photographs of loved ones, or family vacations, and add one or two of pieces from your own collection, and you’ll have a gift that will be treasured for decades.

Every little girl deserves such a special sentimental hand-me-down from the people she cherishes in her life.

After everything that they have offered, from colorful interpretations of well loved literary figures, such as Robin Hood and Harry Potter, Lego have recently ‘gone retro’ with their introduction of a new military Legos range. A friend of mine has a son who, obsessed with all things Lego, can’t wait to get his hands on a set, but his usually-indulgent mum has an issue with this: toy guns are banned in the house, hence the green-suited, booted and weaponed regiment are also considered unacceptable due to not representing ‘child-friendly’ issues, namely war, violence and aggression.

Certainly, war can be an act of aggression, but is a child playing with a tiny green figure, whilst learning about what a soldier does: serving, saving and protecting, the same thing? His mother feels that the introduction of this new range is a subversive political move to endorse US / British role as ‘aggressors’ in the Iraq war, therefore the toys are “doubly banned in my house”: but is the enforcement of that attitude itself a greater means of corrupting the child’s innocence than the toy itself? Even if, say, Lego did have an ulterior motive in introducing the range to highlight the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan – would that be a bad thing to do, to remind the culture at large that there are several nations’ boys out there undertaking missions to protect and save, under the call of duty, whatever side they serve?

At any time of war (or peace) children have had their ‘toy soldiers’ – from tiny tin men with their splash of lead paint, to plastic and, into the 21st century, paper soldiers and Lego: surely this is more a passive indicator of how toys reflect our culture than any active endorsement of war or subversive political means of preparing a whole new generation of mini-aggressors? Given that the army Lego range includes a ‘Toy Story’ army, again based more on retro favourites (in terms of both the old plastic army men and Toy Story – now amazingly fifteen years old) is it not a case of giving children a means of play that links directly with learning about their culture, rather than actively contriving to enforce negative, aggressive attitudes? It would seem to be even more appropriate a judgement, given that the age-group who are playing with the Lego have approximately been around since the very start of the Iraq war and are a generation growing up under its shadow. Perhaps it’s healthier that this generation learns the rudiments of what war is and the job of soldiers from trusted sources and means of play in their own home, than through embittered parental attitudes which ban the means by which the children could most effectively, and safely under parental supervision, start to learn about what war is and what a soldier does?

For our precious little babies, we invest on quality clothes and accessories. We buy baby clothes, accessories and other things like baby blankets made of good materials that are often high-priced.

Baby blankets are basic necessities. They are used for swaddling to relax and calm down the baby. They keep babies warm. They help put babies to sleep. Some babies grow on them as “security” blankets – whenever they feel frightened, uneasy or uncomfortable, the baby blankets work as refuge or protection. They are a great keepsake too. But for others who are practical and not too sentimental, instead of keeping these blankets wasting space in your closets and gathering dusts in the corners, clean up and empty out your storages. Here are few ideas on re-using your old baby blankets when your kids outgrow on them.

Sew the Baby Blankets Together to Make a Bigger Blanket or Quilt

Even if you are a beginner in sewing, you can easily sew together the rectangular-shaped baby blankets to make a bigger blanket for you or for your kids. You can make a nice decorative quilt or comforter. If you are creative and you are good at sewing, you can even sew a seat cover or a nice table centerpiece. Make drapes out of the sewn-together pieces. You can even use them as mats for playtime.

Donate the Blankets to a Cause

Giving these useful baby blankets to charity, hospitals, orphanages or calamity victims is always a good alternative and wise decision. Other people need them more. Let these useful little warmers swaddle other babies. Donating to others is the perfect opportunity to help and reach out to the needy.

Make it an Heirloom

Your toddlers and preschoolers who are fond of role-playing can use these baby blankets to tuck in their baby dolls. Sew them to make baby doll clothes. If you have forgotten that you kept them in the closet or up in the attic for years, have them washed thoroughly and pass it on to your grandchildren, along with a wise quote or two.

Dust Clothes and Flannels

The fabric of the baby blankets could be used in polishing or picking up dust. Cut them down into smaller pieces to use as dust clothes.

Turn them into Cloth Diapers or Cloth Baby Wipes

Yes! You can make cloth diapers out of the blankets too. Use them as burp clothes for your babies or baby wipes for your toddlers. Cut and sew them to make extra bibs. The material of baby blankets is very absorbent. Good for wiping sweat or liquid spills.

Baby Blankets as Gift Wrappers and Christmas Ornaments

It is very sweet idea to use your baby blankets to wrap gifts. Find a nice fabric ribbon to match the colors and patterns of the blanket.

Wrap old plain Christmas balls or add a bit of stuffing and embellish with decorative beads, buttons, trinkets, charms and cute ribbons. Turn the baby blankets to pretty Christmas ornaments. Be creative and cut them out into simple patterns and shapes and stitch them around the edges.

A growing trend in parenting is baby sign language: teaching American Sign Language to children as young as 10 months old. Along with new trends come new myths. Are you damaging your child? Are you setting him up for failure in school? Will she develop speech later than other kids her age? Let’s take a look at the 5 very prevalent myths about baby sign language.

The child will not start speaking when he should
Quite the contrary, a child who signs feels less frustrated with communication in general, making the transition to speaking even easier. Signing children don’t need to cry and throw tantrums to express themselves.

The child will have fewer words in her vocabulary when she starts speaking
Children who learn sign language at an early age learn real words and their meanings. This actually gives them an edge when it comes to spoken language!

The child isn’t learning real sign language, so it won’t carry into adulthood anyway
Not true! Sign language DVD series like Signing Time and My Baby Can Talk teach real ASL – American Sign Language. It’s a language “spoken” by millions of people all over the world!

Kids can’t manipulate their hands and fingers effectively enough to sign
Signs for basic needs such as milk, tired, hungry and thirsty are not complicated. Even the youngest signer can make the sign for milk, the motion of which mimics milking a cow – opening and closing your hand in a clenching motion. Children learn at a very young age how to clap their hands and wave – sign language is an extension of these gestures!

Kids under 2 years of age shouldn’t watch any TV, so baby sign language videos can’t be used
While some experts believe that no television for children under 2 should be the rule, practical experience by millions of parents shows that a small amount of television is not damaging to children at all. Watching a baby sign language DVD like Signing Time for 30 minutes three times a week – with parental interaction – is enough for the child to pick up on the language. The immediate and measurable benefits of increased communication far outweigh the nebulous and theoretical “damage” that one group of experts believe in.
